Apple finally announced what was possibly the worst kept secret in computing, the iPod Shuffle. It is Apple’s flash based mp3 player that has been rumoured since at least October. It doesn’t have a screen and the gimmick behind it is that you can autofill the iPod and it will randomly play music for you. This is all well and good, but I still want to see the screen. It doesn’t even need to be anything more elaborate then the iTunes 1 line display for song titles and artist. They are priced quite well though, so I can see where these are going to knife through the competition, being cheap and trendy. I think I still might get one, as the price is great. I just took a look at Future mac miniShop and there isn’t even anything in the ballpark of the pricing for a 512MB($129 CDN) and 1GB() players. I envision these are going to create a frenzy in mp3 players as everyone will need to adjust their product pricing as Apple is leading the way again.
The Mac Mini also was announced. It’s a cheap($499) Macintosh, which is news onto itself. Given that Apple has never had a value priced computer before, this thing should make some big waves for them for people who are fed up with Windows security and virus issues. I think Apple can make some huge headway with this, as now their comparatively priced with bargain Dell systems, so this could be big.
If you do happen to buy an iPod Shuffle, remember this.
