Ongoing History Of New Music

For the longest time, since I started listening to rock radio back in the 90′s I’ve really enjoyed a program called the Ongoing History Of New Music, which was originally found on 102.1 The Edge in Toronto before being syndicated across Canada. While I can’t say I really enjoy the homogenized version of The Edge that exists today anymore, this is the one show that has remained constantly great. Among my friends I’m pretty much the go-to guy when it comes to music knowledge, and this show is a large part of why that is.

Hosted by Alan Cross, the show covers a wide variety of subjects from bios of bands and artists, theme shows like Bad Career Moves or Before They Were Famous or topical shows like The Tricky Issue of Sampling. All of which are crammed with insightful tidbits, did you know? kind of items and facts you might not find anywhere else. Alan heavily researches each topic and does an amazing job of digging up new facts about artists that you might have thought you knew everything about. He’s pretty much a walking encyclopedia of music knowledge. Alan Cross also has this voice that is pure radio gold. He has one of those voices that when he talks you definitely want to know what he’s talking about. The show also well exceeds the bounds of the simple "alternative" genre, playing music from the 60′s and 70′s and lots of bands you might have never heard of.

Now why do I mention all this? Well, The Edge has just recently got into putting some of their radio content online and one of the things that is now available is The Ongoing History Of New Music. There are over 500 episodes, of which there are 31 online so far and they are gradually working to get more online. If you are into the story behind the story of rock music, this is the show for you.
