I’ve noticed something recently. Corina and I have been going through some rough financial times because she’s been out of a job for awhile. While this has kinda sucked, it’s also been a bit of a blessing in disguise. Since she’s been off work we’ve probably been as busy as ever. Many of our friends are in a similar boat having just moved and are still getting accustomed to life outside their parents houses. It used to be that you always needed a reason to go out, be it to a restaurant or bar, with most plans hinging on having money to do so. Since almost everyone in my group of friends has moved out now, it seems like things are back to the way they used to be when I was a teenager. You’d hang out at friends places, watch sports or movies and play video games. It almost seems as you get older you feel the need to complicate plans, and often the complication is money. It used to be you’d have a car full of people driving around to wherever you were going, even if it was a tiny car. Not everyone had a car, so you went with whoever could provide the transportation. You’d laugh and have a great time on the way there just because you were with friends. Nowadays everyone has their own vehicle and drives themselves from place to place. While that’s all well and good, it takes some of the fun out of the experience. Recently Corina and I have went for a couple drives to random destinations, gone on nature walks and done stuff that really doesn’t require any money at all, while still being enjoyable.
All in all, I’ve found that money is pretty inconsequential. You can have just as much fun without it. I know when I was a teenager I always aspired to have more money so I could afford to do more stuff. I always figured the fun I was having would be so much better if I didn’t have the limitations not having money has. Guess that’s not the case. While I don’t aspire to be a teenager again, there’s nothing stopping you from doing simple things that don’t cost a lot. More often then not it’s the company you keep that’s fun, and less what you’re doing to pass the time.
