I’ve been following the World Cup pretty avidly so far. Aside from the fact I have to work and have missed the games, I’ve still caught them when I can and quite enjoyed the action so far. My World Cup pool picks are officially in shambles, as one of my picks to make the finals, the Czech Republic, was officially eliminated yesterday. I’m still holding out hope for England, but I think that may require a miracle with how some of the other nations are playing.
With watching the games comes lots of commercials when they can slide them in. Given there are no commercials during a half of soccer(football), so they just absolutely force feed you with them when they get the chance before, at half and after the game. The consensus among people about these commercials so far has been that the Adidas spot with the kids choosing their “+10″ teams. The premise Adidas is using with their +10 promo is who would you pick for to be on your team if you were playing pickup. I went to the Adidas website and tried to pick my team, but opted not to. The list of players they have available is kinda terrible, as I believe it’s limited to players associated with Adidas. So I opted to pick my team and post it here on my blog.
So to start out we have myself playing right wing. I used to play left wing for years and years, but then switched to right wing to take advantage of my left foot.
In the centre I have Jurgen Klinsmann of Germany. This man was always a phenomenal striker, having lead the Germans to the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He was probably the first soccer player that really caught my eye growing up.
On the left wing I have Davor Suker from Croatia. Another great finisher and winner of the Golden Boot in the 1998 World Cup. I think having both Klinsmann and Suker would give me a pretty awesome aerial assault as well as I love send crosses into the box.
In the midfield I would start with England’s Paul Gascoigne. Gazza would play on the right side.
As centre right back I would have another Englander Steven Gerrard. Gerrard is my favourite player from the England squad, and when you score a goal like this you can be on my team any day of the week. He is also a great 2 way player.
As a left centre back I would have the Czech Republic’s Pavel Nedved. He’s got loads of talent and scores plenty of pretty goals and has cool hair.
And kinda begrudgingly on left side I would have Brazil’s Ronaldhino. I’m not a fan of Brazil, or really Ronaldhino, but man this guy’s got game. He’s got moves people haven’t dreamed of and he’s got plenty of pace.
I had a real tough time figuring out my defence, as I have a tendancy to be a fan of more offensive minded players, but I have some goodies here, it just took some thought. Anchoring my defense I would have John Terry from England. He’s a solid centre back and is a great leader on the field.
For right back I would have Argentine Gabriel Heinze. Though the guy does play for Manchester United(boo Reds), I do quite like his style of play anytime I’ve seen him in action.
And rounding out the defenders I would have England’s Stuart Pearce at left back. He was a solid defender and is currently the manager of Man City, so he seems a solid pick.
And as a backbone to my +10 team I would have German Jens Lehman. While I’m not a fan of Arsenal, but I’ve always liked Lehman as he is a great goalkeeper. I think goalkeeper is the only position where players get better with age, so having an experienced tender seems a prudent idea.
As you can see my team is pretty skewed to English football and the Premiership, but that’s what I watch mostly when it comes to my football viewing. Either way, I still think it would be a pretty damn good team. If you would feel so inclined, create your own +10 team on your blog, then drop me an email.
