Mugatu
Officially another Halloween party is in the can. As you can see I opted to go as Will Farrell’s Mugatu from one of my favourite movies, Zoolander. The costume went over pretty well, though I had to explain it to many people before it clicked in for them. Apparently Mugatu wasn’t as instantly recognizable as I had thought, but it’s all good. I suppose I learned a valuable lesson in costume making this year. Last year I had opted to go as an Amish farmer, which was pretty much unmistakable. If you want to avoid explaining your costume all night, pick something a little less obscure. Big thanks on this goes out to my Mom for coming through with some custom sewing work and Corina for helping out with the wig.

As for the party, it went quite well for our third annual shindig, the second held at our apartment. As time has gone on with this party the bar keeps on getting raised with regards to the quality of costumes. This year we had the Nightmare Before Christmas’ Jack Skellington, Al Borland, Heidi and Wilson from Home Improvement, Betty Rubble, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, Dog The Bounty Hunter and wife Beth(complete with overinflated breasts), V from V For Vendetta, Steve Irwin(complete with stingray barb), a she-devil, a doll, a fairy, 2 confused hockey fans and Mel came as The Sea, complete with seaweed. Sadly I found I did a pretty poor job of taking pictures, so for those who did take pictures, I’d like to see what you managed to get. Anyhow, the voting was tight for the coveted titles of best costume. In the female category there was a clear winner with Jen and her doll costume, which made up for last year as she was narrowly shaded in the voting. For the second year in a row the fiercely contested top male costume came down to a pivotal dance-off, as has become the official method for resolving ties. This year pitted Kevin, as Dog The Bounty Hunter versus Nick, as neighbour Wilson from television’s Home Improvement, a costume complete with fence. It was hard fought, at some times including some tandem dance moves, but in the end Nick’s dance moves proved too strong and he was the consensus winner. The background music for the dance-off was rather confusing, as it was the Home Improvement theme playing at the same time as the Dog The Bounty Hunter theme. It was interesting to say the least. For his efforts Nick took home the DVDs ofAbraxas: Guardian Of The Universe, starring former Minnesota Governor Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Final Comedown, starring none other then Lando Calrissian himself, Billy Dee Williams.

Once that was resolved we shut things down and headed over to Knuckleheads for last call and the best costume contest they have there. We did this last year and I managed to win a t-shirt for my efforts. This year there was a band from London called The Joys that were performing. They were pretty decent. Their one original song they did while we were there was actually pretty good. I could see them going places. Anyhow, once they finished up their set the lead singer did the MC-ing for the costume contest. In that contest justice was served and the prize went to the duo of Dog and Beth, while the second prize went to the Home Improvement gang. Sadly Sam didn’t get anything for his excellent costume of V as the third prize was awarded to a guy who had dressed up as Jason and been present at the bar the whole night. He had the Guy Fawkes mask, wig, hat and cape, made his own throwing knives out of wood, cardboard and electrical tape and looked downright excellent. So to you Sam, I tip my hat to your efforts and concede you were in fact shafted at Knuckleheads. After the contest a bunch of friends who were at another party in town piled into Knuckleheads. Les was dressed as Gandalf The White, which was a pretty decent get-up, while Nathan was dressed as the most horrid woman you might possibly lay eyes on. The breasts even had nipples. It was a sight to behold. So all in all it made for a pretty good night, though a bloody cold walk home.
Halloween 2006
On Sunday we played our first official game of the soccer season, notching a 3-1 victory. It was a pretty decent game, though the refereeing was pretty one sided for the other team. I managed to hyper-extend my knee during the game, but I played through it. I’m hobbling today for my efforts, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t do any damage to it. So far this season I would say the team is looking pretty sharp and I think we’ll do well this year.
