Recently Corina and I have been on the search for an apartment in Cambridge. We checked out one place and quite liked it. It was an old house that featured an upstairs apartment, finished attic, wrap-around balcony and hardwood floors throughout. It seemed pretty ideal, so we decided to go through the application process right away. The landlord did the reference check and offered us the apartment for us to rent last Thursday. We arranged a walkthrough inspection of the apartment for Saturday, where we would also sign the lease. On Saturday the landlord is forced to cancel after she realized she forgot the lease forms at her work so we rescheduled for Monday night. Come Monday night we show up and the landlord breaks the news that we wouldn’t be getting the apartment.

At this point I’ll rewind the story a bit. When we originally went and toured the apartment we found that the house itself was for sale. According to the landlord she had split the ownership of the house with her daughter, who had apparently moved out hastily in November. At that point she worried about being able to handle the mortgage payment so she panicked and placed the house up for sale. Upon some further thought she decided that she overreacted and in fact did want to keep living in the house, assuming she would be able to find a good renter for the place. So she went and placed an ad in the Kitchener Record, which was where we found out about it. While we were waiting to find out about the result of our rental application there were 2 open houses, as she was still under contract with the real estate agent up until the end of January. So this weekend she had an open house and received an offer on the house and accepted the offer.

So Monday night in the end resulted in less of a wrapping up our apartment arrangements then it was a return to square one. I have to say I’m really frustrated because I feel like we’ve been jerked around. Now instead of preparing to move we have to run around and repeatedly drive into Cambridge to check out places. This is balls.
