To pickup where my last post on our apartment search left off I’ll state that we definitely had an up and down week. Since last Monday we’ve gone out and seen 8 different apartments. We managed a big blitz on Saturday, checking out 4 different apartments in 3 buildings, all of which had potential, but essentially left us wanting, as deep down we still wanted to find a gem like the original apartment we looked at. You find when you see that many apartments in a condensed timeframe the details about each place starts blurring together. Some had parking, some places it was extra. Some were giving away free iPods as a move in incentive, while others had hidden ants and smelled of pot and cigarettes. The most bizarre trait of any of the places we viewed was the small triplex apartment that had a small living room, small bedrooms and bathroom, yet a giant hallway and 1500 closets. Though in the end you find that all the apartments has an inherent same-yness, as really there are only so many ways you can layout 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and living room. Corina and I were torn between 2 of the managed apartment buildings. After a long discussion over an elegant lunch of KFC and Taco Bell we were pretty much at an impasse. We had driven through nearly every street in the areas we were looking and eventually decided to head home, feeling slightly defeated.

On the way home I tried to keep it optimistic, stating that maybe when we get home one of the many places I had emailed to inquire about apartments might have called me back. We get home and I find we did in fact have 3 messages. One was a hang-up, another was ADT yet again trying to sell me a security system(how many times do I have to tell them I live in a fucking apartment building?) and third call was the sound of our luck changing. It was the landlord of the original apartment we had agreed to rent. Sounding very sheepish she said that the deal to her purchase her house had fallen through and she was again looking to take us on as tenants. After the previous 5 hours we had spent looking at lacklustre apartments this was really music to our ears. While both Corina and I were a bit apprehensive in a once bitten, twice shy kinda way, we agreed to drive back into Cambridge to sign the lease. So now we can officially say we are locked into a 1 year lease and that our new apartment is a real diamond in the rough, which we can confirm that having seen much of the rough in the last week. We’re moving February 24th(the day before my birthday) and now we really need to get our asses in gear with regards to packing. The added bonus to this is that we also got confirmation that our apartment is rented, so we no longer need to keep the place showable. Maybe things aren’t so balls after all.
