When we moved awhile back I decided to cut ties with Bell Canada altogether and get a VoIP phone with Vonage. Personally I’ve always hated Bell. Having a simple phone with them ran me $30 a month, and that didn’t even include long distance. When I signed up with them it was more because I lacked options on the whole thing. So when given the chance to leave them I jumped at the first opportunity.

Since we moved my home network has been a tad touch and go. First of all, since I wanted a fresh start with my network I bought a refurbished Netgear WRT624 (108 Mbps) to replace my aging Netgear MR814 (11 Mbps). I mention this because I’ve tried to replace this router now on 4 separate occasions without any success. It always seems that the replacement always seems to fail to be able to do things that my 5+ year old router handles with ease. The only reason I want to replace it is because of the added speed boost it would offer for things like my Xbox Media Center for video streaming.

After moving I decided to ditch Rogers High Speed and their brutal traffic shaping. I find it’s pretty ridiculous that they offer a 60 GB download cap on their service, yet with their service you’d be hard pressed to use 1/4 of that bandwidth with all the restrictions they have in place. It seems they clamped down heavily on downloading right around when we moved, so it really became useless to try and download last weeks Jericho episode when it was going to take 4 days. So I called up and cancelled. The amusing part I found was that their retention department really did nothing to try and keep me us as a customer after I called them on their bogus policies. Since I ditched Rogers I am now with TekSavvy, and I have nothing but praise for this company. I have Dry Loop DSL and it has been great so far. The setup was reasonably easy and their download speeds are unreal. I’ve been getting 500k/sec at times, which beats the pants off Rogers and their claims of being the fastest internet service.

The only problem I’ve had with my new service is that I can’t get the bloody thing to work with my new modem. I’ve tried for weeks now to no avail, it just refuses to work. So in the end I’m still using my old Netgear router while my new router sits unused. It is pissing me off to no end that I can’t get it to work. It worked just fine with the Rogers service, but nada when it comes to the new DSL service.
