Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the first ever Toronto FC home game. A friend of mine at work scammed some tickets for my companies corporate box for the home opener, so he and a friend of his ended up having 2 single seats left from tickets that they already had previously, so these extras were offered to me. The tickets weren’t even close to being together, so I had the option of either waiting for the game to start, then finding 2 seats together, or using the standing room only section to watch the game from.
Even though I had tickets to the inaugural game I had a heck of a time trying to find someone on short notice to come with me, eventually finding a taker in Corina’s brother-in-law Shawn. We got to the game not too long before kick-off and took a look around the park to see what was available for standing room only spots. It turned out the whole one end of the stadium was a beer garden area with a railing for viewing the game, so this is where we took in the game. I thought it was pretty great, since we were only about 20 feet away from the endline. I didn’t have a camera with me, so I marked on the picture where we were watching the game from.
The game was pretty tight with both teams getting their chances. Kansas City managed to get a goal in the second half, which held up for a 1-0 win. Toronto FC is still searching for that first goal ever, so hopefully they can notch a couple next game. In the second half the KC goalie was in our end and the fans were on him like white on rice. You can definitely tell Toronto is a hockey town, when everyone was razzing the goalie and generally booing everything that didn’t go their teams way. They booed the goal that was scored, even though it was a pretty solid effort. All in all I would say from the first game that things should go pretty well in Toronto with regards to supporting the team. The building was loud and definitely gave the feeling of being at a proper soccer game. I can’t wait until my next game in May when I get to check out the corporate box.
