Yesterday I got axed from my job. I’ve taken the last day to reflect on things, get my thoughts in order. It’s an entirely new experience for me, though from what numerous people have mentioned to me they’ve experienced similar during their careers. I find the moral of this story seems to go back to one of life’s most basic truths, that if it seems to good to be true, then it probably is.
How my company got to this point seems pretty baffling. It was a case of growing too fast, then hitting a very obvious bump in the road and having to correct course. When the course correction didn’t take effect quick enough for the dollars and cents people up top, down came the axe. All the signs were there and everyone knew it was coming. I was just naïve enough to think that I would be able to weather the oncoming storm and that these changes weren’t going to affect me. Many of my co-workers held the same perspective. I think that comes from the fact that many of my co-workers fall into the 20-something age bracket that hasn’t had an experience like we all shared yesterday to jade our outlook on life. Many of the more experienced people in the company definitely knew better and were genuinely freaking out about it. Now I can say we’re all one step closer to being salty middle-aged workers who break out into a cold sweat when we hear whispers around the watercooler about downsizing.
There are many things I’ll miss about this job, but I think for the most part it’ll be the people. The job itself hadn’t been very good of late, as many of us were stuck doing menial work(well beneath many people’s abilities) as part of a “Revenue Recovery Plan”. I can only assume that this could very well have been a catalyst to this downsizing, as paying people premium salary to do work high school and college students could viably do probably doesn’t make sense when crunching the numbers in some Excel spreadsheet.
Anyways, don’t fret about me, I’ll land on my feet. Though if you know anyone that needs a decent web/graphic designer, send that info my way.
