I went to go see Superbad on Friday night. Aside from the fact that I suspect Corina and I might have been the oldest people in the theatre, I found the movie quite enjoyable. We went to see the movie at the Galaxy in the mall, which pretty much gets over-run by teenagers after hours. The theatre itself was just packed, which I figure is a pretty good indication that this movie will probably be #1 at the box office this weekend.
Superbad is a movie that aims to be a modern day Dazed and Confused, which is a pretty good formula to emulate. The plot of the movie takes place pretty much in a 24 hour period, following the adventures of Seth, Evan and Fogell. They’re a bunch of high school losers who get invited to a party and get tasked with buying booze for said party using a fake ID. The story pretty much follows this plot and the calamity that ensues. The funny thing I found about this movie is that it really didn’t seem that far fetched to me. In my teenage years I can recall begging older friends to buy booze for a party and subsequently lugging a case of beer all the way across town in a backpack. That’s where I think this movie succeeds, being able to relate to the experiences of these characters, as I’m sure most people have all sorts of crazy teenage adventures involving lots of underage drinking.
The one thing that I kinda marvelled about after watching this movie was how cleverly edited the promos for this movie were. Right from the get-go this is a dirty, raunchy comedy, so finding bits that weren’t too rude to be featured in commercials was probably a task. I found myself hearing a line I knew, yet having the punchline to what was featured in the commercial come 3 or 4 lines of dialogue later. Here’s a clip from the movie featuring one of the recurring themes to this movie, penis drawings. It gives a pretty good look at what kind of humour you can expect from the movie.
