As a longtime internet user I find myself quite tethered to the whole experience. And not that I begrudge that fact either, I quite like living the quote/unquote “digital lifestyle”. Having a vast wealth of information at the tips of your fingers is quite handy, to the point of being addictive. Being able to search up a phone number without having to find where the phone book was placed. Being able to check your email whenever you feel like it and respond to them at will is great.

The problem with this kind of arrangement arises on days like today. My internet has been flaky all afternoon. And when the internet has been working my email server has been giving me database errors when I try to log in. This just pisses me off to no end. This afternoon I’m sitting here in my office cursing the fact I can’t log into my email. I find I’m reduced to the level of even the most basic of computer users. I’m sitting there trying to click a link 80 times, as if the 81st time will magically make the internet gods load my requested page. I know in my head that clicking links everywhere in the browser and constantly reloading pages won’t achieve anything as all, yet I still do it. I find the whole experience is almost comparable to a power outage, yet much more exasperating. In a power outage you know you aren’t going to be able to get any work done. When the internet doesn’t work you still have the full function of the computer at your disposal, yet if you need to access your email to find some information on something you’re working on, you’re pretty much S.O.L. at that point. It’s definitely the downfall of wanting to be connected all the time.
