It seems very odd that not one, but 2 movies are opening on consecutive weekends that have the same names as some popular British rock music.

First we have a romantic comedy andthis week’s number one movie, Fool’s Gold starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. This was the name of the biggest hit by The Stone Roses, minus the apostrophe. While the term Fool’s Gold is an old figure of speech, as soon as I hear the term I think of Mani’s bass line and the percussive groove of the Stone Roses.

The second movie is another romantic comedy coming out next weekend called Definitely, Maybe starring Ryan Reynolds. This is also the name of Oasis’ 1994 debut album, though minus the comma. The title is a tongue in cheek oxymoron and I can only assume a bit of a British-ism.

Now the part I find so odd about this is just the fact that these 2 bands are linked to each other, with essentially the Stone Roses being a major influence of the musical movement Britpop, to which Oasis was the frontrunner of the genre. I’m sure it’s just coincidence, it just seems like a really odd one. If Hollywood starts pumping out Parklife, Different Class or Urban Hymns movies it’ll definitely confirm my suspicions that they are trying to co-opt the music of my teenage years.
