VoIP on my iPhone through Vonage Canada

SIAX dialpad I found this sweet little setup for getting Vonage to work on my iPhone the other day. I had looked into using Fring awhile back, which had the ability to add VoIP, but I discovered that it wouldn’t work with my Vonage Canada account. I have just a regular home phone setup with them and wasn’t interested in paying the $12 a month they wanted to charge for a SIP account.

Then I happened upon a forum thread on modmyi.com that covered exactly how to hook up a jailbroken iPhone to VoIP using an application called SIAX.

The issue with using your regular home account is that the password is encrypted, so you have to sort that out before setting anything up. Just copy and paste this URL into your browser and change the bolded parts accordingly.

On that page you will find the ProxyUserPassword. Keep that info for later.

On the iPhone, download SIAX through the Cydia installer. Once installed, just press the accounts button and add a new SIP account and add this info.

Domain: a.vonim.com:10000
Username: YOUR_USER_NAME
Password: ENCRYPTED_PASSWORD

Then just turn the account to on and you should be able to make calls using your Vonage account, assuming you are within range of a Wi-Fi network. Given I barely use my 500 Vonage minutes in a month and I’m on pay as you go with my phone this is so awesome as it lets me use the minutes I pay for already anywhere I have Wi-Fi.

Im out of the country for maybe a few more years. I have paid Vonage Home service (Linksis CAT5 device) for many years now to keep my home phone number.

I had it working on my Iphone via Fring/Siax , but stupid me didn't write the decrypted password down. Iv'e been looking for it everywhere and forever without luck.

Since the crack URL doesn't work anymore, does anyone know of another way to get it? Does it still work? Or did Vonage somehow disable it from working using the old method?

To my understanding Vonage rolled out a new portable service and locked down the secret site, so no more I guess.

Interesting discovery. Now that Vonage Mobile has been made available, I found that I'm able to make FREE CALLS to the U.S. via the Vonage Mobile app for my Blackberry Bold. I simply signed up, used an all Canadian address...instead of BC, I put WA as my 'state' and 5 zeroes as my ZIP. Preloaded a $10.00 on the account and began making calls. I've had a $10.00 balance for the last month and I'm still totally able to make calls.

Because I'm such a nerd, I'm actually blogging about the experience - hoping that I can hook more folks up with the sweet loophole.

the link to access the encrypted password doesn't seem to be working anymore... anyone know of a new way?

To my knowledge this method may be dead, as Vonage changed their setup, so now you have to signup for a mobile voip account, even if you have a regular account already.

Useful info, thanks. Personally I used Fring this time around because SIAX decided to be a prick and start charging to use it.

Yeah, I'm not too sure how it all works. Since that vonage link is a .net domain I would figure it would work, but obviously not. I'm no expert on it, I just found the resource after some digging through forums and wanted to share it through my blog. The best I can suggest is to ask the question of the thread I originally got the info on and see if they can shed some light on the issue

vonage.ca is blocked here at work..
Will try at home.. but I guess
Vonage.ca is different than vonage.com (US)
I can log into that without a problem.

Do you know of a decryption for the us side?

Are you sure that you're using the right username/password? Try logging into vonage.ca first to confirm your credentials before doing it. I just tested the url again and it worked.
